******TRIGGER WARNING: This blog talks about sensitive topics that may trigger certain individuals with specific histories. This blog is meant to be informative to parties who may not have experienced such events and wish to learn and assist/direct others to professional aid. The blog specifically talks about forms of substance abuse and forms of assault******

With the first half of April already past us, I’d like to bring attention to our national monthly April observations. A part of diversity, equity, and inclusion are getting uncomfortable and dealing with sensitive topics. In doing so, we can confront issues in our lives and others’ when they arise as opposed to letting trauma continue to a point of no return. One thing I have learned over my hours devoted to researching these topics to educate others is that healing and power over abuse are possible. There are brave authors, celebrities, and your everyday person that back up these claims with their stories. I’d like to share multiple insights and pieces of advice for recovery for each of these observations. I will also be posting hotlines for topics where appropriate. Empathy and understanding are two of the main sources that stem from inclusion. This month allows us to take time to see each other as equals and assist one another in being the best version of ourselves. To do this, we must take a deeper look into chronic issues faced by individuals that surround us whether they may be acquaintances or close relatives.

At the University of Illinois, it’s important to address and tackle issues within our respective communities when appropriate. Giving others “access” to professional help and hotlines is also a huge part of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The observations include, but are not limited to:

  • National Alcohol Awareness Month
  • National Autism Awareness Month
  • National Sexual Assault Awareness Month
  • National Stress Awareness Month
  • National Cannabis Awareness Month
